Our Work

The scientists who advise the PETA Science Consortium International have considerable expertise in regulatory testing and long-standing relationships with regulatory authorities, industry, and other stakeholders. The Consortium scientists’ diverse backgrounds include molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, toxicology, and environmental science, providing the international animal protection arena with a unique breadth and depth of expertise. Personal Lubricants

25 July 2016: The Science Consortium is applying a multipronged approach to replacing the use of animals for testing personal lubricant products, which are regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration as medical devices.

6 June 2016: The Science Consortium is working to advance animal-free pesticide testing approaches that satisfy government regulatory requirements.

Pyrogenicity

1 May 2019: In 2018, the Science Consortium co-hosted a workshop on using the monocyte activation test as a standalone release test for medical devices.

Shellfish Toxicity Testing

30 April 2019: Consortium representatives promote the use of alternative methods for monitoring shellfish toxicity that replace an assay using mice.

Target Animal Batch Safety Testing

30 April 2019: Consortium members successfully petitioned for the elimination of target animal batch safety testing from all veterinary vaccine monographs in the European Pharmacopoeia.

US EPA EDSP

30 April 2019: Since the inception of the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP), Consortium member scientists have proposed approaches to reducing the number of animals used.

Vaccines and Biologics

30 April 2019: The Science Consortium works to replace the use of animals in the development and regulatory testing of human and veterinary vaccines, antitoxins, and other biologics.
